Controller - Diocese of San Diego

The Diocese of San Diego seeks a Controller.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Controller manages the overall direction, coordination, and work product of the Accounting Department. Safeguard assets and ensure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal controls and checks across all Pastoral Center departments. Produces monthly and annual financial reports and provides support and documentation to external auditors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Management

  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives.
  • Ensure existence of adequate system of internal controls.
  • Manage commercial banking relationships.
  • Manage corporate credit card program.
  • Manage billings of insurance program.
  • Manage diocesan billings to parishes and schools as well as internal billings.
  • Oversee collection of the Annual Catholic Appeal.
  • Oversee the payroll systems across all parishes and schools.
  • Manage the fixed assets of the Diocesan Pastoral Center.
  • Coordinate all internal and external audits.
  • Report to the Diocesan Finance Council on an as needed basis.

Transactions

  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
  • Assist with year-end budget preparation for Administrative Office, CAPS and Services Corporation.
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly.
  • Oversee payroll processing on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Oversee Affordable Care Act compliance including preparation of 1095 and 1094.
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed.
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
  • Perform/manage the month end closing cycle to within 21 days.

Reporting

  • Issue timely, complete and accurate financial statements.
  • Provide for a system of management financial reports.
  • Provide support and reports to the Bishop’s Finance Council.

Compliance

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

The controller candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in a related discipline. Candidate must be proficient in US GAAP financial reporting requirements, CPA designation preferable.

Staff of 3-4 accountants and clerks.
