Parish Financial Accountant - Diocese of Springfield in Illinois

The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is currently seeking a Parish Financial Accountant. This position serves as a financial liaison between the parishes and the Diocese.

This position reports to the Controller and is responsible for establishing internal controls and procedures for parishes, developing finance policies, conducting financial and internal control training, establishing and executing an accounting review program, and supporting standardized payroll and accounting software for parishes.

Essential Job Duties

  • Expand, maintain and execute “review” program for reviewing parish internal controls and financial data.
  • Effect a three year rotation parish review program.
  • Assist parishes with utilization of standardized financial software packages, QuickBooks, under the CathoNet/Right Networks platform and standardized payroll platform, Paychex.
  • Coordinate education/training with current parish priests, trustees, finance councils, employees, new priests and those in the seminary.
  • Analyze parish financial data.
  • Revise and monitor the financial report that the parishes use to report to the Diocese.
  • Assist with writing and dissemination of standard diocesan financial policies to parishes and schools.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of accounting and financial principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Excellence in organization and planning skills, setting job priorities, multi-tasking and meeting deadlines.
  • High degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to solve problems and make effective decisions.
  • Familiarity with computerized, standardized accounting software packages.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Travel to parishes throughout the 28 counties of the diocese and overnight stays are essential to performance of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting or Related Field.
  • 1-2 years accounting experience.
  • Ability to effectively train individuals on software platforms and accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks and Paychex platforms useful.
  • Self-starter, works with minimal supervision.
  • Requires professional demeanor at all times.
